Program at a Glance
The Advanced Computer Science & Algorithms Program is a rigorous, accelerated pathway designed for students who want to master programming, computational thinking, and higher-level problem-solving. Beginning with foundational computing concepts and progressing into AP coursework and advanced algorithmic study, this program prepares students for computer science majors, technical careers, and competitive opportunities in high-demand STEM fields.
Highlights
Students often begin their journey as early as 7th or 8th grade through Fundamentals of Computer Science, giving them a strong foundation before entering high school. Once enrolled, they start with AP Computer Science Principles, where they explore core computing concepts and have the opportunity to earn AP credit. They then advance into Computer Science KP Prep, which deepens their programming and algorithmic thinking, followed by AP Computer Science A, a true college-level course focused on Java, data structures, and object-oriented design.
In their senior year, students choose an applied learning path that best matches their goals, whether that’s a practicum in computer science, a dual credit practicum, or an independent study centered around real-world software development. Students may also choose to take AP Cybersecurity as an affiliated course if they want to explore security principles and digital defense. The entire pathway is built on strong mathematical reasoning, which supports student success in advanced CS concepts.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Students in this program develop a high level of technical skill in programming, algorithms, software design, and debugging. They graduate well-prepared for college majors in computer science, engineering, cybersecurity, and related STEM disciplines. Along the way, they strengthen essential problem-solving abilities, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking, all of which are highly valued across modern industries.
The program also provides opportunities for students to build an impressive portfolio that may include apps, software projects, or advanced programming challenges. Through AP coursework and exam performance, many students earn college credit, giving them a strong head start in postsecondary education. The combination of deep technical preparation, practical experience, and academic rigor ensures that students leave the program ready for both college and future careers in fast-growing technology fields.
