Dual Language Immersion, Multilingual

The One-Way Dual Language program serves students whose primary language is Spanish. Students learn literacy and grade-level academic content in both English and Spanish, developing strong skills in each language while nurturing cultural identity and building English proficiency and high academic achievement. Goal: to develop students who are fully bilingual, biliterate, and confident learners ready to succeed in two languages.

Highlights

The program promotes bilingualism and biliteracy through balanced instruction in English and Spanish, helping students maintain and value their home language and culture while meeting grade-level standards. Graduates gain cognitive, cultural, and linguistic advantages that prepare them for success in higher education and a global society. When program criteria are met, students are eligible to earn high school credit for Spanish 1 at the end of 5th grade, continuing a clear pathway to advanced Spanish courses and the Texas Seal of Biliteracy.

Benefits & Educational Outcomes

Students who participate in the Dual Language program from 1st through 5th grade and meet state-established criteria take a Spanish language assessment at the end of elementary school. This assessment measures language proficiency and academic Spanish development. Throughout the program, students’ progress is monitored in both English and Spanish to ensure they are on track toward biliteracy and future eligibility for high school Spanish credit. The One-Way model supports strong academic outcomes while developing higher-order thinking, reading, writing, and problem-solving skills in two languages.

How It Works / How to Enroll
