Program at a Glance
This advanced Humanities course is designed for students in grades 6-10 who are identified for gifted/talented services in Humanities (ELA/SS) or in all content areas, as well as for learners who demonstrate high academic potential across disciplines. Built on the goals and student expectations in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade English language arts, the curriculum exposes students to a wide range of demanding texts in and outside of class with a strong emphasis on classic literature. The course is intentionally “Socratic and creative” in nature and centers on grammar, vocabulary, writing, poetry, literary analysis, and rich classroom discourse.
Highlights
Instruction emphasizes concept-based, interdisciplinary learning that connects literature to history, the arts, and broader human questions. Students engage in sustained academic discussion, collaborate on research and projects, and practice disciplined writing and presentation skills. The Humanities experience challenges learners with rigorous texts and open-ended tasks that build transferable thinking habits; it is frequently delivered in an extended (KP/GT) block to allow deeper exploration and sustained intellectual work. The program is explicitly designed to meet the needs of gifted and advanced learners and to cultivate the habits of mind required for success in Duke TIP, Advanced Placement coursework, and college-level study.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Students leave the program with advanced literacy, refined analytical and argumentative writing, and greater facility in oral presentation and academic research. The course strengthens critical thinking, close reading, and the ability to construct evidence-based interpretations—skills that improve performance on high-stakes assessments and prepare students for honors and AP pathways in high school. Humanities graduates gain intellectual confidence, creative fluency, and the interdisciplinary perspective that supports continued academic success and readiness for college.
