Program at a Glance
The Plant & Floral Science Program provides students with a strong foundation in plant biology, horticulture, and floral design while offering meaningful hands-on experiences in greenhouse management, floral artistry, and agricultural science. Students learn how plants grow, how to design floral arrangements, and how to apply scientific principles to real-world plant production systems. This pathway is ideal for students interested in horticulture, environmental science, floral design, greenhouse operations, landscaping, or related agricultural careers.
Highlights
Students begin with Principles of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, where they learn the basics of agricultural systems and plant science. As they progress, students take Floral Design, gaining foundational artistic and technical skills in floral arrangement while preparing for credentials such as the Benz Principles of Floral Design and TSFA Knowledge/Level I certifications. Students may then advance into Horticulture Science or its dual credit equivalent through Tarleton State University, strengthening their understanding of plant physiology, soil science, and sustainable plant production.
At the upper levels, students select between Advanced Floral Design—where they refine professional floral artistry and prepare for TSFA Level I/II Certification—or Advanced Plant & Soil Science, which offers a science-credit option and prepares students for the BASF Plant Science Certification. This structure allows students to pursue either a design-focused or science-focused track, depending on their interests and future goals.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Students graduate with both creative and scientific competencies, gaining experience in plant cultivation, floral techniques, greenhouse management, and the biological processes that support plant growth. They develop strong problem-solving, artistic, and laboratory-based skills that prepare them for careers in horticulture, floristry, landscaping, environmental science, or agricultural research. With CCMR credit and multiple opportunities for industry-recognized certifications, graduates leave the program with valuable credentials, technical readiness, and a strong foundation for college programs or immediate employment in plant- and floral-related fields.
