Program at a Glance
The Pharmacy Program prepares students for careers in medication management, pharmaceutical services, and clinical support roles. Through a blend of health science coursework and hands-on training, students learn how medications work in the body, how pharmacy operations function, and how technicians support safe and effective patient care. This pathway is ideal for students interested in becoming pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, or pursuing careers in healthcare fields related to medication therapy, pharmacology, or patient care coordination.
Highlights
Students begin with Principles of Health Science and Medical Terminology, where they learn essential healthcare vocabulary, basic anatomy, and an understanding of healthcare systems. In Level 3, students take Health Science Theory, strengthening their knowledge of disease processes, medical ethics, and clinical safety while earning CPR (BLS) Certification.
The capstone experience is the Practicum in Health Science – Certified Pharmacy Technician, where students participate in hands-on training related to medication preparation, dosage calculations, pharmacy software systems, inventory control, and patient communication. During this practicum, students work toward the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, a nationally recognized certification that allows graduates to enter the workforce as pharmacy technicians in hospitals, retail pharmacies, and clinical settings. Students also complete Anatomy & Physiology or its dual credit option through Lone Star College, which reinforces the scientific foundation required for advanced pharmacy concepts.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Students graduate with strong pharmaceutical knowledge, professional communication skills, and practical experience in pharmacy operations. They learn how to interpret prescriptions, prepare medications, ensure patient safety, and assist pharmacists in delivering quality care. With CCMR credit and the opportunity to earn the CPhT certification, students leave the program ready for entry-level employment as certified pharmacy technicians or for continued study in pharmacy, pharmacology, nursing, or other healthcare fields. The program equips students with valuable credentials, hands-on experience, and a competitive foundation for careers in the growing pharmacy and healthcare industries.
