Program at a Glance
The Healthcare Diagnostics Program prepares students to perform laboratory and clinical testing used to help diagnose, monitor, and treat medical conditions. Students gain hands-on experience with medical equipment, specimen collection, and diagnostic procedures while building a strong foundation in human anatomy, physiology, and healthcare communication. This pathway is ideal for students interested in careers such as phlebotomy, EKG technology, medical laboratory science, or other diagnostic and clinical support roles within the healthcare system.
Highlights
The program begins with Principles of Health Science and Medical Terminology, which introduce essential medical vocabulary, body systems, and healthcare environments. In Level 3, students take Health Science Theory, deepening their understanding of disease processes, patient assessment, and clinical safety while earning CPR (BLS) Certification.
The capstone experience is the Practicum in Health Science – Diagnostics, where students participate in hands-on clinical experiences and perform real diagnostic tasks such as specimen collection, phlebotomy procedures, and EKG testing. Students in this practicum prepare for two key industry-recognized credentials: Certified Phlebotomy Technician and Certified EKG Technician, both of which support strong entry-level employment opportunities in diagnostic healthcare fields. Students also complete Anatomy & Physiology or its dual credit equivalent through Lone Star College, reinforcing the scientific concepts underlying diagnostic procedures.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Students graduate with technical skills in diagnostic testing, laboratory procedures, and patient interaction—competencies that are essential in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centers. They develop strong scientific reasoning, attention to detail, and professionalism while gaining experience with tools and technologies used in modern healthcare. With industry certifications and CCMR credit, students are well-prepared for entry-level diagnostic positions, specialized training programs, or college pathways in medical laboratory science, phlebotomy, cardiovascular technology, nursing, or other healthcare fields. The program equips students with practical experience and recognized credentials that give them a meaningful head start toward clinical careers.
