Dual Language Immersion, Multilingual

The Klein ISD Vietnamese Dual Language Bilingual Program is a biliteracy program that promotes language development through literacy in the core areas of Math, Reading, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Beginning in Kindergarten and continuing through Fifth Grade, core subjects are taught 50% in Vietnamese and 50% in English. The goal of the Vietnamese Bilingual Program is to help students become bilingual and biliterate in a culturally responsive environment while promoting high academic achievement.

Highlights

The program develops students’ heritage language at high levels while supporting strong academic achievement in English. Students gain improved writing, comprehension, and problem-solving skills and benefit from instruction that promotes creativity, divergent thinking, and higher-order cognitive development. Graduates leave with the linguistic, cultural, and academic strengths needed for success in higher education and a global society. When program criteria are met, students may be eligible for high school world language credit at the end of 5th grade, continuing a pathway to advanced language study and recognition for biliteracy.

Benefits & Educational Outcomes

Students who participate in the Vietnamese Dual Language program from early grades through 5th grade and who meet state-established criteria complete a Vietnamese language assessment at the end of elementary school. This assessment measures language proficiency and academic Vietnamese development. Throughout the program, student progress is monitored in both English and Vietnamese to ensure they are on track toward biliteracy and any future eligibility for high school language credit. The program supports grade-level achievement while building bilingual academic skills and sociocultural awareness.

How It Works / How to Enroll

Students identified as Emergent Bilingual students by state guidelines and whose home language is Vietnamese will be offered the opportunity to enroll in the dual language program.
