Program at a Glance
The Outdoor Power Equipment & Small Engine Technology Program prepares students to diagnose, service, and repair the small engines and compact power systems used in lawn equipment, recreational vehicles, agricultural machinery, and outdoor power tools. Students gain hands-on experience working with engines, fuel systems, electrical components, and mechanical assemblies, making this pathway ideal for those interested in mechanical repair, equipment maintenance, or technical trades.
Highlights
The program begins with Introduction to Outdoor Power Equipment & Small Engine, where students build foundational knowledge in tool safety, engine components, basic diagnostics, and maintenance procedures. In Level 2, students advance to Outdoor Power Equipment & Small Engine, deepening their understanding of engine operation, troubleshooting techniques, and repair processes. At Level 3, students enter Outdoor Power Equipment & Small Engine Technology II, where they work with more sophisticated systems and prepare for the Principles of Small Engine Technology Certification, an industry-recognized credential that validates technical skill in engine maintenance and repair.
The capstone experience is the Practicum in Outdoor Power Equipment & Small Engine Technology, where students gain real-world, hands-on experience performing repairs, inspecting equipment, and applying professional service procedures. This program is offered exclusively at Klein Oak High School, providing specialized facilities and equipment tailored to engine technology training.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Students graduate with practical mechanical skills, strong troubleshooting abilities, and experience working with a wide range of small engines and outdoor power systems. They learn to diagnose mechanical issues, perform routine maintenance, and repair equipment used in landscaping, agriculture, recreation, and commercial service industries. With CCMR credit and the opportunity to earn an industry certification, students are well-prepared for entry-level technician roles, apprenticeships, or continued study in automotive technology, diesel mechanics, equipment repair, or other skilled trades. The program builds confidence, technical competency, and readiness for high-demand mechanical careers.
