Program at a Glance
World Dance Studies as an IB course is a two-year, college-level exploration of dance practice, composition, and scholarly inquiry designed for 11th- and 12th-grade students participating in the IB Diploma. The curriculum balances studio work and theoretical study: students develop technical and expressive skills; create, rehearse, and present original choreography; and investigate dance as a disciplined art form through research, reflection, and documentation. The course moves students from guided exploration to sustained independent work that culminates in polished performance and a documented research investigation.
Highlights
Instruction weaves technique, choreography, and analytical study so learners experience dance as practice and discipline. Students train in a variety of movement styles and processes, refine performance skills, and experiment with choreographic structures and production elements (lighting, staging, design). Coursework emphasizes choreographic craft—from idea generation and development through refinement and presentation—and asks students to maintain detailed process journals, video documentation, and critical reflections. Assessment is performance-and-portfolio based: students present practical work, submit documented creative processes, and produce written or recorded analyses that demonstrate technical growth and intellectual engagement with dance-making.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Completing World Dance Studies develops advanced technical proficiency, choreographic fluency, and the ability to analyze and defend artistic choices. Students gain strong rehearsal habits, collaboration and leadership skills, and the research and communication abilities colleges seek. The program sharpens creative problem solving, time management, and professional presentation—preparing students for the future. As part of the IB Diploma, strong performance in the course also contributes to the student’s overall diploma profile, which can support college readiness and opportunities for advanced standing at postsecondary institutions.
