Program at a Glance
IB Music is a two-year, college-level arts course offered as part of the IB Diploma Programme that develops advanced musicianship through a balance of performance, composition, and musical investigation. The curriculum asks students to create and present original work, perform solo and ensemble repertoire, analyze music from diverse traditions, and reflect critically on artistic choices. Instruction blends studio practice, ensemble rehearsal, theory and aural skills, and research so students graduate with polished performance skills, compositional fluency, and the academic perspective colleges value.
Highlights
IB Music emphasizes three interrelated strands: practical music-making (performance), creative work (composition and arrangement), and contextual study (analysis and research). Students take part in individual and ensemble performances, compose and refine original pieces, and undertake a sustained musical investigation that demonstrates scholarly engagement with a musical topic. Assessment combines internally assessed performances and compositions with externally moderated tasks that require written and recorded evidence of artistic process and critical reflection. The course is offered at both Standard and Higher Level, with Higher Level students completing a more substantial creative and performance workload and deeper independent research.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
Completion of IB Music develops advanced technical and expressive skills on an instrument or voice, heightened aural and analytical abilities, and disciplined practice habits. Students learn to craft convincing performances, compose with intention, and communicate ideas about music in clear, evidence-based writing and presentations. These abilities strengthen college applications for music and liberal-arts programs, prepare students for audition and scholarship processes, and often translate into college credit or advanced standing where accepted. Equally important, IB Music cultivates creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and the professional practices—portfolio development, documentation, and reflective critique—that serve musicians and arts-minded students in higher education and careers.
How It Works / How to Enroll
IB Music is typically taken as part of the two-year Diploma Programme sequence. Prospective students should have prior experience in performance or music study (ensemble participation, private lessons, or coursework in music fundamentals) and be prepared for sustained practice, public performance, and research. Admission commonly involves a review of musical background and, in some cases, an audition or teacher recommendation. Families and students should consult the campus IB coordinator or music director to review prerequisites, materials and instrument expectations, and how IB Music fits with diploma requirements and ensemble commitments.
