Program at a Glance
IB Theatre is a two-year, college-level theatre program that blends practical creation, theoretical study, and reflective research. Designed for juniors and seniors as part of the IB Diploma Programme, the course asks students to conceive, rehearse, and present original theatre work while studying performance traditions, theatrical theory, and the contextual factors that shape live performance. IB Theatre challenges students to develop professional rehearsal habits, collaborative skills, and the critical language necessary to analyze and defend artistic choices.
Highlights
The program balances hands-on studio work with academic investigation. Students engage in ensemble creation, devising, scripted performance, production design, and direction, while also researching theatre history and methods. Coursework emphasizes disciplined rehearsal processes, dramaturgy, technical theatre skills, and public presentation; students document their creative process, compose critical reflections, and produce a sustained research or practical project that demonstrates growth. Instruction is led by trained IB theatre educators who guide students through both performance practice and inquiry-based assessment, and the school provides the rehearsal space, technical resources, and production opportunities needed for authentic theatre-making.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
IB Theatre develops versatile artists who write, research, and perform at a collegiate level. Students sharpen acting and production technique, learn collaborative leadership, and gain the research skills to contextualize their work historically and within performance traditions. The program strengthens creative problem solving, public communication, and project management—competencies that support success in performing-arts degrees as well as careers in design, production, education, and arts administration. Completing IB Theatre also signals to colleges that a student has engaged in rigorous, interdisciplinary study and sustained creative practice.
