Program at a Glance
Klein ISD’s Newcomer Program supports recently arrived multilingual learners in grades 6–12 by combining targeted English Language Arts instruction with language supports that allow students to access grade-level TEKS. Students also attend English Language Development and Acquisition (ELDA), a focused course dedicated to strengthening listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Core content teachers receive specialized training to meet the unique academic and linguistic needs of newcomer students, ensuring a strong foundation for long-term success.
ELLA / ELDA / ESOL Overview
ELDA — English Language Development and Acquisition — centers on building all four language domains (listening, speaking, reading, writing). ELLA — English Language Arts and Acquisition — is provided in middle school to integrate language and literacy with grade-level content. ESOL — English for Speakers of Other Languages — is the model used in high school. Together, these programs provide a continuum of language instruction and supports tailored to students’ grade level and proficiency.
Highlights
Klein ISD’s Newcomer Program serves students in the beginning stages of English language development and helps them adjust to a new school environment. Through ELLA/ELDA in middle school and ESOL/ELDA in high school, students strengthen English skills while continuing to grow academically. Specially trained teachers deliver supportive, language-rich instruction and use sheltered and scaffolded strategies so students can access core content as they accelerate language acquisition. The program empowers students to develop their voice, thrive academically, and contribute their unique strengths to the Klein ISD community.
Benefits & Educational Outcomes
All students in the program participate in the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) each year; TELPAS measures progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing and provides data that helps teachers monitor growth and celebrate language development. With regular progress monitoring and targeted instruction, newcomer students build the English proficiency and academic skills needed to meet grade-level expectations, succeed in higher-level coursework, and transition confidently into mainstream classes.
Placement & Supports
Newcomer students receive a coordinated set of services—including newcomer transition supports, language-focused instruction, and trained content teachers—designed to address academic, linguistic, and social needs as they adapt to a new school system.
